Malaysian, Singaporean win Gran Fondo New York Indonesia 2017

These two winners also earned the title of GFNY Asia Championship and will be placed in the front line at the GFNY final race that will be held in New York City on May 20.

thletes from Malaysia and Singapore came out as winners in the male and female categories respectively at the Gran Fondo New York Indonesia 2017 competition.

Held in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Sept. 3, the competition was joined by 800 participants from 32 countries.

Cyclist from Malaysia, Raziff Jafaar, took the first spot in the overall male category with 4:17:49. He previously won the GFNY Malaysia 2017 championship.

Meanwhile Singaporean cyclist Shirley Teo with 5:53:18 was the first winner in the overall female category.

These two winners also earned the title of GFNY Asia Championship and will be placed in the front line at the GFNY final race that will be held in New York City on May 20.

The track for GFNY Indonesia 2017 was divided into two routes: Grand Fondo (165 kilometers) and Medio Fondo (80km). The start and finish points were at Mangsit, which situated right in front on the Holiday Resort.

The Grand Fondo route began by cycling through the Gunung Sari for 27km and then headed to Pusuk Pass that has an altitude of 332 meters, Monkey Forest, passing through the seaside of northern beach for 100km, before arriving at the turning point located in Anyar at KM 92.24.

During the last kilometers of their tour, the participants were treated with spectacular views of the cliffside and ocean.

The Medio Fondo route had similar route with the Grand Fondo but its turning point was in Tanjung and then they had to pass through the coast of northern beach at KM 52. The last 24 kilometers of their journey was filled with ocean view.

NTB Provincial secretary Rosyadi H. Sayuti who opened the race said that GFNY is a prestigious world-class event that could bring in plenty of participants from overseas.

“For us as a tourist destination, this [event] is what we’ve expected and what we need. With more foreign participants, it will bring positive impact to the tourism in NTB,” said Rosyadi.

“Our target for this year’s tourist arrivals is 3.5 million people; so far we’ve accomplished 50 percent of it. There’s a high chance we are going to achieve the target,” he added. (kes)
