Born in Denpasar, Bali, Joey has earned three Grammy nominations. Two of them are for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for “Giant Steps” and “Countdown” and the other one is for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his album My Favorite Things.

His upcoming visit to Indonesia this November is part of a move to promote his album Countdown, which features three original and seven cover songs.

The cover songs include “Countdown" by John Coltrane, "Criss Cross" by Thelonious Monk, "For Wee Folks" by Wynton Marsalis, "Chelsea Bridge" by Billy Strayhorn, "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Eddie Harris, "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin and "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock. Meanwhile the original songs are “City Lights”, which was debuted at last year’s Grammys), “Sunday Waltz” and “Soul Dreamer.”

The young musician usually performs together with his contrabass player named Dam Chmielinsky for the live performance of the three singles. Joey has also collaborated with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. for the song “Maiden Voyage,” as well as saxophonist Chris Potter for the song “Freedom Jazz Dance.” (kes)
