fter a successful run of Bali International Piano Competition 2017 that was recently held recently in Legian, Bali, the Tourism Ministry is set to hold similar competition named Batam International Open Piano Competition 2017 on Oct. 21-22.

Set to take place at the Swissbel Harbour Bay, this is the first time for Batam to host this kind of piano competition.

“The registration was closed on Oct. 11. More than half of the applicants are international pianists from Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China,” said the committee’s head Elonora Aprilita.

Up to 85 participants reportedly had signed up for the competition, of which 52 percent are from overseas.

“Some of the Singaporean participants are from prestigious music conservatories such as Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts,” she added.

Many Singaporeans participated in the competition due to the fact the country is only 45 minutes away from Batam.

The event reportedly also attracted pianists from a music school in Vietnam named Music School Vietnam Ted Saigon.

The participants will have one to three months time to memorize and practice on a long piano sheet prior to the competition.

They are scheduled to start arriving in Batam on Oct. 20 for a re-registration process, most likely accompanied by their family members and music teacher. (kes)
