Majalengka to host annual traditional ritual this month

The ritual is actually a self-reflection moment among the locals that all humans are from Earth and we all live on Earth. It is also a ritual to pray for a fruitful harvest season.

ajalengka regency in West Java is set to host the annual Guar Bumi Ciparay Majalengka traditional ritual on Oct. 29 at the plaza of Ciparay Village, Leuwimunding district.

The event is said to be supported by the Tourism Ministry, “It is held annually, right before the beginning of planting-rice season and rainy season. For this year, the event will have plenty of interesting activities that are expected to attract domestic and foreign tourists,” said the ministry's archipelago marketing development deputy, Esthy Reko Astuti.

The ritual is actually a self-reflection moment among the locals that all humans are from Earth and we all live on Earth. It is also a ritual to pray for a fruitful harvest season.

The upcoming event will feature supporting events such as Dongdang and Spear Carnival, Bebegig (scarecrow) Carnival, topeng dance, sampyong genjring dance, calung music performance, Langen Budaya traditional puppets performance by Ki Dalang H.Rusdi, Tausiya Kebudayaan with KH Maman Imanulhaq for seven nights, culinary and handicraft exhibitions and a tour of visiting historic sites.

Prior to the event, several community figures together with village heads will conduct the ritual first. They will chant prayers and exchange traditional dishes such as ketupat (rice cones) and lepet.

Tumpeng nasi kuning (cone-shaped yellow rice) and grilled chicken are also going to be served there, “these dishes will be put outside the locals’ front doors as a symbol of asking for blessings and permission for farmers to do activities in the middle of rainy season,” said the ministry's head of Cultural Promotion Wawan Gunawan.
