he Batam International Open Piano Competition 2017 event officially ended on Oct. 22. The two-day event's closing featured performances from the winners. The competition managed to attract participants from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, China and Vietnam, as well as participants from different cities in Indonesia.
The event’s committee head Eleonora Aprilita explained that the event aims to facilitate young pianists to compete and to form a community of young talented pianists as well as supporting the Wonderful Indonesia program.
One visitor named Hoai Dhang Thanh flew from Vietnam to accompany his son, Bamboo, who was a participant and fifth spot winner of the competition.
“This is my first time coming to Batam and Indonesia. I’ve heard a lot of things about Bali and I will go there someday,” Hoai said, adding that since there is no direct flight yet from Ho Chi Minh to Batam, they had to travel to Singapore first in order to get to Batam.

According to tourism ministry's archipelago tourism marketing development deputy Esthy Reko Astuti, Batam is in the third position in the list of cities in Indonesia that welcome the largest number of tourists, right after Bali and Jakarta.
“Batam contributes 20 percent from the total number of international tourists who visit Indonesia, this why we are supporting this event to be held in Batam,” said Esthy. Additionally, Batam is closely located to Singapore and Malaysia. (asw)
