Bulukumba holds eighth Phinisi Festival

T

he Bulukumba regency in South Sulawesi is currently hosting Phinisi Festival 2017. The three-day event had its opening day on Nov.2 and will end on Nov.4. This year marks the eighthanniversary of the Phinisi Festival.

Bulukumba tourism department head Muh Ali Saleng said that this year’s festivity presents a new event called Leppe’e – Bira Trip, a sailing trip joined by phinisi traditional boats and various sailboats. The starting point is at Leppe’e Port in Bulukumba and final destination is in Tanjung Bira.

To be qualified for the trip, a boat’s engine capacity should be at 15 GT. Participants of this trip does not only include local sailors but sailors from all across South Sulawesi province as well.

Bulukumba regional administration has prepared various prizes which include a car as the main prize, and motorcycles for the Leppe’e – Bira Trip winners.

Apart from the trip, a group fishing competition is also being held around Tanjung Bira. Each group consists of seven participants, the winner will be based on which group catches the heaviest fish. However, they are not allowed to catch humphead wrasse or shark fish.

“This is also a socialization event for the local people, especially fishermen on fishing ethics and regulations,” explained Muh Ali.

phinisi launching event is set to be held during the festival as well, the procession is called Anynorong Lopi and the location is at Tanaberu boats manufacturing site in the Bontobahari district.

Other traditional events that visitors can enjoy at the festival include Kajang traditional rituals called Addingingi Kampong and Attunu PanroliPabbitte Passapu dance and Kajang weaving demo show at Kajang area.

“We feature these traditional rituals as a way to preserve Kajang culture that not many people ever heard of and to attract local and overseas tourists,” added Muh Ali.

Meanwhile, a music performance is held at the Tanjung Bira area, featuring performers such as Ati D’Academy and Indonesian Dangdut Contest (KDI) alumni Lidya, Ayu and Agus Ray.

Phinisi Festival 2017 also presents BergemBira Carnival featuring arts and culture from 10 districts, Phinisi Expo, Jambore Photography and Kite Festival. (asw)
