he world is getting more familiar with capsule hotels, a type of accommodation originating from Japan. It is a practical solution for travelers, businessmen and backpackers who only need a space to sleep. What’s the point of paying a fortune for a hotel room when all we do is sleep for a few hours?

A capsule hotel manufacturer from Japan is planning to venture into Indonesia this year. Under the brand Capsule Indonesia, capsule hotels will open at a number of airports in the archipelago.

Rere, a marketing and communication representative of Capsule Indonesia, said to kompas.com that there is already a capsule hotel open in Surabaya, using the technology and original concept hailing straight from Japan.

Capsule Indonesia met Kompas.co at INAPA 2018, an automotive show held from Tuesday to Thursday at Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO) Kemayoran. The brand showcased a few types of capsules at the expo. A white capsule measuring 2.3 cubic meters fits one adult. There are also capsules with double bed and offices at its base, called the office capsule.

The capsules can be unlocked with a sensor key card and are equipped with control buttons, a 22-inch television, air temperature controller, USB and earphone ports and an alarm. Meanwhile, shared bathrooms are separated from the capsules.

“Our upcoming opening will be at Soekarno-Hatta airport, with rates starting from Rp 180,000 (US$13.1),” said Rere.

Made of ABS plastic that is commonly used in aircraft cabins, the capsules also come with smoke detectors to ensure safety. (mut)
