Traveloka survey: Majority of 'mudik' travelers prefer to fly

A recent Traveloka survey held in anticipation of the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday shows that the majority of people prefer to make their homebound journeys by plane.

he end of the holy month of Ramadhan is usually marked by mudik, a mass exodus, as Muslims across the country make their annual journey to their hometowns to join their families in celebrating Idul Fitri, also called Lebaran.

This year's collective Idul Fitri holiday has been to last 10 days, from June 11 to June 20, through a Joint Ministerial Decree the government recently announced.

According to the latest survey by travel e-commerce platform Traveloka, the majority of Indonesians prefer to travel by plane on the mudik journeys.

"With regard to the holy month of Ramadhan and Lebaran holiday, we've conducted a survey with more than 1,311 respondents to understand our customers' behavior during this time, as well as when preparing for their holidays," Traveloka public relations director Sufintri Rahayu said at Wednesday's media gathering in Jakarta.

The Traveloka survey shows that 60 percent of respondents preferred to travel by plane for their journeys home. The least preferred modes of transportation include the bus, preferred by only 2 percent of respondents, followed by the train at 12 percent. 

Among the top three mudik destinations are Surabaya in East Java, Medan in North Sumatra and Makassar in South Sulawesi, according to the survey.

The survey also shows that 62 percent of Indonesians will be traveling with their families for mudik. (asw)
