Gunung Kidul's risky, unique coastal tourist attractions

Two beach destinations in Gunung Kidul regency, Yogyakarta, feature unique spots to enjoy a different view of the coast.
Timang and Nguluran beaches are two locations that boast two man-made tourist attractions for visitors to take in panoramic views of the rocky cliffs and crashing waves, as compiled by kompas.com.
Timang Beach
Timang Beach is located on the South Cross Lane (JLS) in Java, more precisely in Purwodadi village, Tepus district, Gunung Kidul. It has two mainstay tourist attractions, a gondola and sea bridge.
They connect a high cliff to a large coral beach called Watu Panjang, which sits in the middle of the ocean.
The gondola, which was originally used by traditional fishermen looking for lobster shrimp, is now a vehicle for adrenaline tourism whose tariffs are quite steep.
For one crossing, visitors are charged Rp 150,000 (US$9.98) in addition to an entrance fee to the destination, which is Rp 5,000.
The rope bridge sits to the east of the gondola line and costs Rp 100,000 per person to cross.
Both rides span 300 meters, crossing a large area of rocky cliffs and choppy seas.
Beware, however, that despite the high price, visitors are not given any security equipment, such as life jackets, safety cords or helmets.
Although both are deemed safe, the risk of an accident will always be there, especially with nature’s unpredictability.
In addition to the two main tourist attractions, Timang Beach also has a number of photo spots at various rates, ranging from Rp 5,000 to Rp 30,000.

Nguluran Beach
Nguluran Beach is located west of Timang Beach, and is tucked in Girikarto village, Panggang district.
One of the most popular spots is the Glass Terrace, which is a 13 millimeter-thick transparent glass layer that is built on the edge of a cliff.
Visitors are required to pay Rp. 20,000, a rate that allows them just two minutes to take pictures.
There is also a Flying Becak that use hydraulic technology and the Giant Chair, which is built on a cliff, not far from the Glass Terrace area. Each is priced at Rp 10,000 for a three-minute session each. (liz/wng)
