QUESTION

  • No local TV channel will air the Beijing Olympic Games because of the cost of the broadcast rights. This means Indonesians will be unable to watch the Games for the second time in a row, after the Athens Games. What do you think?

    This is very sad news indeed Im a South African studying here and still hoping this is just a joke. I cant believe ill miss the Olympics what about the opening ceremony I hope atleast it can be covered.

    That is terrible. The government should evaluate why this thing happens.

    Firstly, it is the government's failure to promote sport activities and the interest of its people in sport. Sport is very important for a country in a way it promotes health, culture and spirit of competition, which Indonesia is very lacking.

    Secondly, the people in this country do not really care what is going on internationally even in an overwhelmingly large scale. A lot of efforts are needed to educate the people to know, participate, and to look at things from global perpectives. It is a way to make Indonesia known globally and to work hand in hand internationally so to bring this country out of poverty.

    Thirdly, it is also the failure of big businesses and TV companies. There is certainly an absence of such desire and skill in drawing people interest in tuning to Olympic events. Provided that they can all work together tactfully to promote the Olympics and their brands on TVs, the end result would be a win-win for all parties concerned, including its people. Costs of airing the programs in the world's 4th most populous country will become nothing of an concern. But in fact it will become something you enjoy doing.

    I feel bad for this country and its people. Nothing is ever too late. Act now or you will regret.
