  • Djoko S. Tjandra is yet another example of a corruptor, who had the opportunity to fly abroad just days before the court handed down its verdict. How can this happen again and again? Send your opinion by email to readersforum@ thejakartapost.com or by SMS to +62-8111-87-2772. Include your name and city

Very easy, just pay the airport officers then they will let you go. They like to help when they receive appreciation reward in return. No surprise if Djoko will get away with this. There is corruptions going on at the airport, just like story below happened recently. On 23 June 2009, around 3.00 pm, My customer flew from Europe to Jarkarta airport to connect to Semarang. She came to the meeting with me for final prove the order of furniture from Indonesia in many containers. However, what really pissed her off very much, was that she got robbed by the VISA ON ARRIVAL Officer, who was on duty at that time at Jakarta airport. She accidently ran out of empty page, but still there was a last page with almost fully empty as there was only one stamp. He suddenly took that to make excuse to reject her, even she tried to explain to him. Then he asked how she will show appreciation if he helped. She had no choice, so she offered USD 40, then he threatened to send her back as it was too little, finally he made a number of USD 200 to worth his kindness. She finally had to pay him to get the visa to get in this country to finish our work. She also saw the same officer turned to the indian-canadian who just need to transit to Bangkok to rob him. This is the cancer of society. This officer is damaging your country's image. He is the front line to welcome the tourists, the investors around the world to your country and he suddenly is the first one to show that corruption & bribery started here. This person needs to be punished and removed from office and investigation need to be applied to check if the higher authority and concerned personel knows about this but ignore or got a share of this. I think it is not hard to check who was on duty that day. Yes, Corruption & bribery is everywhere in every country, but it does not means that we should accept it as part of life or ignore it and then later on our chidren will think OK stealing or cheating is not wrong. We must be firm between right or wrong and grow this things in our chidren mind, that's what it should be for better principle future society and well developed country. I hope my voice will be heard and will help improve things there. I like Indonesia and I met many good muslims friends business partners and they were upset that this officer ruining their image. Sincerely yours Nana
