Communication practitioners Uli Herdinansyah, Hilbram Dunar and Bayu Oktara conducted on Friday a free public speaking event called Workshop Kilat Jago Bicara at the Jakarta Creative Hub in Central Jakarta.

The three practitioners, who are united as “3Speakers” under the Komunolog agency, shared their knowledge on basic public speaking skills, which include how to know the audience, ways to control nerves when speaking in front of an audience, body language and script writing to about 20 participants. The event is part of Indonesia Jago Bicara (Indonesia Is Great at Speaking), Komunolog's CSR program.

“There are actually many ways to do something for Indonesia. Because our skills are in speaking and training, we try to teach and give as many free [public speaking] training as possible in every part of Indonesia,” said Hilbram, adding that similar events are planned for the future.

He also said, “We really want to give Indonesians the skills that would enable them to do more than just speak. [So that they can speak] to make people understand, in order to achieve what they want, to convey their ideas correctly and to be understood.”

Uli stated that although public speaking may not be a talent that is naturally possessed by everyone, it is a skill that can be learned.

“There are many MCs who didn’t like to speak in public, but ended up making a living through public speaking,” he said.

Participants of the event came from various professional backgrounds, including employees and businesspeople. Cassen Tanuwidjaja, who works in sales and marketing, said that he decided to attend the event to gain more knowledge in public speaking.

“Public speaking is needed in every part of our lives — for work purposes, business, or even studying. This skill is needed to face clients or prospective clients,” he said.

Meanwhile, businesswoman Sandika Dewi Rosalini came to the event because public speaking is her passion.

“I hope that I can continue to improve my public speaking skills after this program. My dream is to be a communications practitioner one day,” she said.

Following the event, 3Speakers will hold three public speaking classes for professional purposes at the Jakarta Creative Hub, this time commercially, in June. (asw)
