The political rivalry between two former leaders of the Association of Young Indonesian Businessmen (Hipmi) – Erick Thohir and Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno – will not affect the solidity of the association, said Hipmi’s organization division cahirman Anggawira in Jakarta on Monday.
“Hipmi focuses on economic issues, and therefore political differences among factions within the organization will not affect the solidity of the association,” he said in Jakarta on Monday as reported by kompas.com.
Sandiaga is now the vice presidential candidate who will run in the presidential election with presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, while Erick was appointed chairman of the national campaign team of the incumbent President Joko “Widodo” Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin ticket.
Erick was a board member of Hipmi when Sandiaga chaired the association from 2005 to 2008.
Anggawira assured that Hipmi remained neutral in the presidential election, which will be held in April 2019. While he pledged that the association would not meddle in the political interests of its members, he expressed pride that two of its members had key roles in the elections.
Anggawira also expressed hope that whoever wins the election would be able to make the Indonesian economy better.
Meanwhile, both Sandiaga and Erick, who are long-time friends, had also expressed their commitment to maintain their friendship even though they are in different camps now. “Now, we have our own duty, but the old days should be forgotten,” Erick said previously. (bbn)
