T

he Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno expressed on Monday his expectation that the number of Chinese tourists to Indonesia would increase, banking on China’s rapid economic growth.

Sandiaga made the remark in Shanghai, China, to where he embarked on Monday on a mission to sell Indonesian tourism with an aim to boost the number of Chinese visitors.

His entourage is comprised of 20 selected industry players, including travel agents and tour operators, as well as representatives from destination management companies (DMC), hotels, airlines and tourist attractions.

"We hope this [sales mission] will help boost inbound tourism from [China] to Indonesia and position Indonesia as a favorite holiday destination for international tourists, including those from China," said Sandiaga, as quoted on Tuesday by Antara.

According to Sandiaga, China is a major market that contributed 2 million tourist arrivals annually before the pandemic, due in part to that country’s rapid economic growth.

"Chinese tourists are among the many international tourists visiting Indonesia. Therefore, the decision to conduct a sales mission [to] Shanghai is the right step, and we are ready to support the success of this mission and its follow-ups," said Berlianto Situngkir, Indonesian Consul General in Shanghai.
