The nostalgic aura of science-fiction/thriller summer binge-watch Stranger Things managed to propel the new mini-series to new heights of popularity and its young actors into the A-list orbit. Stranger Things managed to beat its own most popular record which was previously held by Making a Murderer and Daredevil.

Stranger Things tells a story about a missing boy, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) whose mysterious disappearance in a small town in 1983 evokes the curiosity of those close to him and reveals a secret government project. The series reintroduced Winona Ryder whose rise to fame came appropriately in the eighties, and several newcomers such as Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown and Gaten Matarazzo.

Digital Spy reports that in the first 16 days of its release, 8.2 million people streamed the series, making it the only Netflix original series to pick up such high numbers. Stranger Things has also been listed in IMDB as the most popular series in the 2016 summer, and fans are already demanding season two. 

The series’ creators Matt and Ross Duffer told Hollywood Reporter that season two is in the works although no official statement from Netflix has been released yet, and there is a possibility for the series to be ‘darker’.

“We kind of hint about where we might go at the end of the season. Will was living in the upside-down other dimension for about a week, and the repercussions of that can’t be good. So a lot of it is exploring that, and this interdimensional rift is still very much open — so that also can’t be good.”

Following the series’ success, Netflix tactfully released a playlist on Spotify including tracks such as The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, Foreigner’s “Waiting For a Girl Like You”, David Bowie’s “Heroes” and a string of 80s hits.
