T

he government is set to recognize traditional arts maestros that have helped preserve and develop the country's authentic culture by providing them with an award and incentive.

"The award is a form of the government's appreciation for individuals as well as institutions that have preserved Indonesian culture," said the Education and Cultural Ministry's culture director-general Hilmar Farid in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Dubbed Anugerah Kebudayaan dan Penghargaan Maestro Seni Tradisi 2016 (cultural and traditional arts maestro awards), the recognition is said to be equal to the popular Kalpataru award for conservation of nature and the Adipura award for clean and green cities.

Hilmar said the awards would be presented to 54 recipients from nine categories. An incentive of Rp 50 million will also be given to nine recipients of the Pelestari (preserver) awards, three local administrations, three media companies, three communities, three foreign individuals and four recipients of the Maestro Seni Tradisi (traditional arts maestro) awards. The ministry has also prepared Rp 25 million for five recipients from the Children/Youth category.

Held since 2012 as part of the government's efforts to strengthen the nation's character, the ceremony is slated for Sept. 23 at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Central Jakarta. (kes)
