“Indonesia is the perfect location for VICE’s first office in Southeast Asia,” said Mo Morris, managing director of VICE Indonesia, in a press release made available to The Jakarta Post recently.
“It’s one of the most vibrant and exciting countries in the region. It has the fastest-growing middle class in Asia and a large population of young, plugged-in people eager for the kind of content we produce.”
VICE Indonesia will be a bilingual portal where readers can also get past articles from other regions, which previously had not been available in Indonesian.
Speaking of its journalistic style, Morris said the publisher “will bring VICE’s trademark style to stories that are often lost in the hectic media cycle”.
“In short, we cover a bit of everything, but all of it with our own angle and tone. What we don’t do is daily news, celebrity gossip, or tired rehashes of the day’s big events,” he said.
VICE Indonesia has partnered with Google Search to create a web series spotlighting the night scenes in Jakarta; Bandung, West Java; Yogyakarta; Surabaya, East Java; Bali and Medan, North Sumatra, working with actors Tara Basro, Alex Abbad and Ario Bayu as guides to the cities.
Known for its immersive and edgy journalism, VICE started in Montreal, Canada, in 1994 and has spread its operations into more than 25 countries.
