hree students of the Darmajaya Informatics and Business Institute in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, are getting ready to take part in a dance competition in Taoyuan city, Taiwan.

Yolanda Aprianti, Faity Cristie and Lorensia Lilik Panca Asih are emboldened by their success in a contest in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in October, where they came third in the final stage of a dance contest for foreign students. Performing Lampung’s traditional dance muli betanggai, they defeated participants from other universities.

They will represent Kaohsiung for the national dance competition to be held on Saturday.

The three of them, alongside two fellow students, Nurul Fadila and Ronal Diantry, are currently studying at Cheng Shiu University in Kaohsiung as part of the institute’s Student Mobility program. The program allows them to study abroad for one semester.

“At first we just wanted to introduce one of the Indonesian traditional dances, which is a dance from Lampung, to the audience of mostly foreign students,” said Yolanda on the institute’s website. “It turned out that the judges’ response were very good, so we were able to enter the final stage. Of course, we are also proud that the dance from our province Lampung beat other participants.”

Although they did not perform on stage with their friends, Nurul and Ronal helped them prepare, for instance with costumes and headdresses.

“There was only one siger [headdress], while there were three dancers,” said Nurul. “Due to the limited time and accessories, we handled it by using marble paper. Tthank God, despite the obstacle, our team was still able to move to the final.” (asw)
