T

he first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernie Cline’s debut novel, Ready Player One, debuted at the San Diego Comic Con in July 2017. Earlier today, Warner Bros. released another trailer on Facebook Live, featuring Cline answering questions about how his compelling story originated.

The movie—like the book—is set in a virtual universe known as the OASIS, where players can visit any conceivable world and be whoever they would like to.

The new trailer opens with Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) introducing himself, saying “My dad picked that name because it sounded like a superhero’s alter ego”. He describes the OASIS, where people come for the things they can do and stay for who they can become.

It then shows James Halliday (Mark Rylance), founder of the dystopian realm, who tells gamers that he has died but left behind a massive Easter egg for them to find. Whoever finds it will receive half a trillion dollars and control of the entire virtual reality system. Wade participates in this hunt alongside Art3mis (Olivia Cooke).

Warner Bros. also released a retro poster of the film today, which looks very much like the novel’s paperback cover.

In related news, Cline revealed in the Facebook livestream that a sequel to the novel was in the works, nothing that Spielberg helped him jumpstart this follow-up to the story. (afr/kes)
