'American Idiot', the 2004 hit single from California pop-punk band Green Day has become the number one song on Amazon's best sellers list in the United Kingdom on Monday, only days before the visit of United States President Donald Trump.
The Huffington Post reported that the song, which was written in 2004 by the band as a swipe against then-president George W. Bush, has also cracked the top 20 of Britain's official singles chart midway through the charting week.
The song has also come in and out of the top 10 and 20 on iTunes' singles chart in the last few days, the publication reported.
The song's performance on the chart is largely down to a social media campaign launched to protest Trump's visit to the UK.
"Buy a download & stream @GreenDay 'American Idiot' between Friday 6th to end of Thursday 12th July to make it the UK No.1 single on the very day Trump arrives in the UK (13th)," the group of protesters said using the Twitter handle @TrumpIdiotNo1.
Green Day is known for its left-leaning politics and earlier this year, the band's lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong blasted Trump's supporters by saying: “I have no problem telling ignorant fucks like you to go to hell.”
