In The Jakarta Post of Oct. 21, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines advertised flights to "Europe from US$ 664" -- an amazingly low price.
However, on entering their website to make a booking, it soon becomes clear that the advertised fare does not include taxes or fuel surcharges, which amount to a whopping US$405 (60% of the advertised rate) bringing the total to US$1,069.
Surprisingly, these additional cost are not mentioned in the ad at all. This raises the question: Is KLM trying to deceive consumers?
It is already bad enough that many airlines quote taxes and surcharges separately, but not mentioning it at all is seriously bad practice.
I suggest KLM takes a look at Singapore Airlines, one of the world's best and most profitable airlines. To my knowledge they always advertise inclusive prices.
After all, in reading "Europe from US$664", shouldn't we expect this amount is what we must pay to get us there?
