SURABAYA: The Sunan Ampel State Islamic Institute (IAIN) is applying for a grant worth US$23 million from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to renovate its city campus.

Rofiq, spokesman for the IAIN, said in Surabaya on Monday that the grant would strengthen ties between the Islamic institute and the bank, and would allow them to renovate campus facilities and improve teaching staff.

"We have many old buildings, including staff housing, that need an overhaul. The funding would assist us in opening new faculties and developing the institute's struggling programs," he said.

The proposal was loosely based on similar grant applications at institutes in Yogyakarta and Malang, he said.

"With the grant, the institute is expecting to be able to improve its output." -- JP
