URABAYA: To help deal with increasing traffic in the city, the Surabaya municipal administration is set to realize its existing plan to build a busway system in the city by 2010.
The decision was largely a result of an increasing number of motorized vehicles in the region, Municipal Development Planning Agency (Bappeko) chief Tri Rismaharini said. "We are now concentrating on finishing a frontage road *FR* along Jl. Achmad Yani and a box culvert on Jl. Banyu Urip," Tri said.
In its initial stage, the network would cover Surabaya's northern and southern regions, namely the Tanjung Perak-Bungurasih route, at least until the a project to widen Jl. Achmad Yani was complete.
The Surabaya busway plan was first made public in 2006. However, it was dropped by the municipal legislative council after the plan was declined by the Public Works Ministry, which had prioritized a project to widen Jl. Achmad Yani before introducing a busway. A legal case involving alleged graft and gratification further delayed the plan. - JP
