ENPASAR: Gadjah Mada University (UGM) students swept the awards at the 23rd national science competition on Friday. Students from the Yogyakarta-based university won the Adhikarta Kertawidya trophy and captured nine gold, four silver and six bronze medals at the contest, which was hosted by Mahasaraswati University in Denpasar.
UGM's team defeated 113 universities, including defending champion Brawijaya University, which had won the competition for the last two years. Other top finishers were the 10 Nopember Institute of Technology, Surabaya (ITS), Yogyakarta State University (UNY), the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
The committee selected 290 winning scientific papers from 27,000 submitted during the competition. UGM students submitted 600 proposals, 34 of which passed selection.
"This year is tougher since there are more participants, almost twice last year's amount. The quality is also better," UGM team coordinator Danish Sriwijaya said. - JP
