Environmental issues have become a major problem over the past several years
nvironmental issues have become a major problem over the past several years. The problem of waste, global warming, deforestation, landslides, floods and other natural disasters are looming. Each of us has begun to realize that the Earth is sick and that we have to save it together.
Universities are places where students are groomed to find solutions to the problems of the nation. How developed a country is can be seen from the quality of its higher learning institutions. Therefore, universities should be the vanguard of finding solutions to the nation’s problems, including environmental issues.
Eco-campus
An eco-campus is an environmental management system, which is sustainable and aims to create a campus with environmental awareness so it can play an active role in solving existing environmental problems.
Creating campuses that have environmental awareness is concrete action universities can take to contribute to protecting our beloved Earth. Therefore, we representative students from several universities in Indonesia took the initiative to form a collaboration we called the Forum Kampus Hijau Indonesia (Indonesia Green Campus Forum, FHKI).
Forum Kampus Hijau Indonesia
The forum is a collaboration among Indonesian students to create green campuses. The FKHI was initiated during the eco-campus movement student conference — a part of the Sebelas Maret University (UNS) student activity Green Fair — held on Nov. 27, 2010 at the UNS campus in Surakarta, Central Java. The conference was attended by representatives from seven universities: The UNS, Bandung Institute of Technology, University of Indonesia, Padjadjaran University, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Mataram University and Bogor Institute of Agriculture.
The students realized that the action to resolve environmental problems needed collaboration and synergy to create a massive and realistic impact. The purpose of the establishment of the FKHI is to create a better environment through the creation of campuses with environmental awareness — a realization of the “Think Global Act Local” slogan.
The FKHI’s functions are:
To act as a media body for information dissemination, education and communication for all Indonesian students to realize the eco-campus concept at their campuses.
A symbol of the collective spirit of the eco-campus movement.
The FKHI is an independent collaboration and open to everyone who shares the purpose to create a better Earth. We hope in the future all universities in Indonesia collaborate and synergize in unity. So, let us go together hand-in-hand to create a better Earth.
