he Malaysian government deported 285 illegal Indonesian migrant workers and three children via Sri Bintan Pura International Seaport, Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, on Friday.
The departed workers consist of 237 men, 48 women and three children ' aged between 15 days to four years old. Two from the group were taken to hospital shortly after they arrived in Tanjung Pinang.
'Before being deported, we were in a Malaysian prison for up to several months because we did not have legal employment permits,' one of the migrant workers, Nasrul, said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Half of the migrant workers faced lashes. 'Many of us had the skin ripped off from lashings,' said Nasrul.
Among the deported Indonesians was Hayatullah Firdaus, a fisherman from Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Islands, who was arrested by Malaysian Sea Patrol Police when he went fishing.
'[The arrest] occurred around three months ago. I didn't realize I was in Malaysian waters, I went fishing alone,' he said.
The deported migrant workers were sent to temporary shelters in Tanjung Pinang. They would be sent back home by a Pelni ship from Kijang Port in Bintan to Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta. (nai/ebf)
