A

man from Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, climbed 50 meters upa high-voltage PLN tower in front of Senen market in CentralJakarta on Monday to protest the firm's failure to pay him landcompensation.

According to eyewitnesses, Fransiskus started climbing the tower
at 4 a.m. to demand that state electricity firm PLN compensate him for 2.5 hectares of land in Toda Belu subdistrict, Ngada district, Flores, Berita Jakarta reported.

A relative of Fransiskus, Maria Kristina, who was also at the scene, said PLN had build a steam power plant on the family's land but had refused to pay compensation due to a lack of funds.

'We have been asking for compensation since 2005, and yet both the regional administration and PLN don't want to pay it because they have no funds,' she said.

Commenting on the incident, Senen Police deputy chief Adj. Comr. Indriani said the police would question Fransiskus once he descended the tower.(dic)
