resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that instead of taking a free trade or a completely anti-market approach, he tended to choose the 'third way' in carrying out economic developments.
The President made the statements while speaking at the Thomson Reuters Newsmaker Forum in Singapore on Tuesday. He spoke at the the event attended by CEOs, bankers, international investors and analysts. The event was aired to countries across the globe via the Reuters media channel.
'To be honest, I'd rather choose the third way, which doesn't have to depend on the two polar opposites,' said Yudhoyono as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said Indonesia was a unique country in which there were two opposite thoughts on markets ' pro and anti-market ' currently growing within its society. Therefore, he said, different approaches were needed to deal with the situation.
According to Yudhoyono, a market is needed to develop the country's economy. However, Indonesia also needs the assistance of the government to further develop.
The President said he had developed a four-track-economic policy, namely pro-economic growth; pro-jobs; pro-poverty eradication; and pro-environment.
He claimed that the strategy had been successful thus far in enabling Indonesia to maintain its 6 percent economic growth in the midst of the global economic crisis. (asw/ebf)
