Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that as many as 1,500 policeofficers had been deployed to the location to provide security. He said to mitigate traffic gridlock during the May Day rallies, the police hadclosed Jl. Thamrin and Jl. Jend. Sudirman, including the Transjakarta busway laneserving Blok M-Kota.
The workers planned to march from Jl. Thamrin to stage a rally in front of theState Palace, despite the fact that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would beaway meeting with workers in Surabaya. (hrl/dic)
