Karen Agustiawan among world'€™s 15 most powerful female oil-and-gas figures

K

aren Agustiawan, the first woman to lead state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, is one of the names included in the London-based event company Terrapin'€™s 15 Most Influential Female Executives in the Oil and Gas Industry.

The 54-year-old Pertamina president director is on the list with other influential women in the sector, including Brazil'€™s Petrobras CEO Maria das Graças Silva Foste; Nigeria'€™s Petroleum and Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke; and Uganda'€™s Energy and Mineral Development Minister Irene Muloni.

Pertamina spokesman Ali Mundakir said in a statement on Thursday that the achievement highlighted women'€™s significantly growing presence in the male-dominated oil and gas industry as the number of female oil and gas company CEOs in the world, including Pertamina'€™s Karen, continued to increase.

Karen began her career in the oil and gas industry by joining Mobil Oil (now ExxonMobil) shortly after graduating from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1984.

In 2009, she made history by becoming the first woman to lead Pertamina, the most bankable state-owned corporation in the country.

She recently set another record by becoming the first Pertamina CEO to be re-elected to run the company.

Pertamina, which employs more than 1,400 women, or around 10 percent of its total workforce, booked a record high Rp 25.89 trillion (US$2.67 billion) in net profits last year under Karen'€™s tenure. (ebf)
