ovi Susanti, 30, has admitted to beating her stepdaughter, Widya Astuti, 5, because she frequently received verbal abuse from the latter's father, Supriyadi, says National Commission for Child Protection chairman Arist Merdeka Sirait.
"[Novi] took out her frustration on Widya because she had no courage to confront her husband. She would pinch or hit the victim after her husband scolded or called her names," Arist said on Wednesday, adding Novi had already confessed when he visited her at the Depok Police's detention earlier in the day.
Widya's uncle, Ismail Tabrani, found her in convulsions with bruises and with blood oozing from her ear in the home where she lived with her father and Novi in Tapos, Depok, on Monday afternoon. She died on Monday evening on the way to Karya Bhakti Hospital in Depok after Dompet Dhuafa Hospital in Bogor refused to admit her for "inadequate facilities" and after Cibinong Hospital in Cikaret refused to admit her when the family was unable to pay Rp 1 million (US$102) a night for a hospital bed. A police autopsy indicated the girl died from a blow to the back of her head.
Depok Police detectives chief Comr. Ronald A. Purba said the suspect was facing 10 years' imprisonment for violating the 2002 Child Protection Law, while the police would also investigate Supriyadi, who allegedly let Novi abuse Widya. "We're also preparing a mental health check for the suspect."
