he South Jakarta mayoralty will soon revitalize a 2.5-hectare islet, located in the middle of Setu Babakan reservoir, as a setting for Kampung Betawi (Betawi village).
'[The islet] will accommodate Betawi houses, cuisine and cultural performances,' said Setu Babakan head of marketing Sibroh Malisi on Wednesday, as quoted by tempo.co. He also plans to provide getek (bamboo-rafts) to transport visitors to the islet.
During the inauguration of South Jakarta mayor on Wednesday morning, Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo urged the new mayor, Syamsudin Noor, to place emphasis on the development of Betawi culture, which constitutes the ethnic characteristics of Jakarta.
Sibroh said the condition of the islet was currently neglected and overgrown.
The local administration will also build the Betawi Cultural Miniature Park next to the entrance of Setu Babakan reservoir.
The funds, Rp 290 billion (US$29.7 million), for the project have been earmarked from the 2013 Jakarta regional budget. The administration expects it to be complete by 2014. (nai)
