n official urged the Batam municipal administration to establish an agency on border management to avoid problems with Singapore and Malaysia.

'We have asked Batam mayor to form a regional agency to tackle border problems,' Triyono Budi Sasongko, secretary of the National Agency on Border Management (BNPP), said.

Batam Mayor Ahmad Dahlan said that new agency would connect the Batam administration and the BNPP.

'We intend to form the agency by the end of this year,' Ahmad told The Jakarta Post.

Indonesia currently uses the Helen Mars and Banteng coral reefs used to demarcate Batam's border with Singapore. Problems might arrive if the reefs, barely visible during high tide, one day vanish due to
abrasion.

Triyono said he would need to consult with the Defense Ministry before commenting on the coral reefs.(nai/dic)
