emarang municipal election monitoring committee ordered the campaign teams of the three-Central Java gubernatorial election candidates get their campaign material off the streets for the three-day cooling-off period in the run up to the polls on May 26.
The Panwaslu chairperson Sri Wahyu Ananingsih said in Semarang on Thursday that the committee in association with the local public order agency had been trying to take down the campaign banners in the city all day.
"We have told the 57 advertisement bureau involved in the campaign to strip away the banners," she said. "But they have yet to take action."
One of the commissioners at The Central Java General Elections Commission, Nuswantoro Dwiwarno, said that during the cooling-off period, the parties were only allowed to display campaign materials in their offices.
Three pairs of candidates will contend in the upcoming gubernatorial election slated for May 26. They are incumbents Governor Bibit Waluyo ' Sudijono Sastroatmodjo, Ganjar Pranowo ' Heru Sudjatmoko and Hadi Prabowo ' Don Murdono.
Bibit and Sudijono have been jointly nominated by the Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN) and Golkar Party. Ganjar and Heru are supported by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), while Hadi and Don have been nominated by a coalition of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), National Awakening Party (PKB), United Development Party (PPP), People's Conscience Party (Hanura) and the National Ulema Awakening Party (PKNU).
