A saltwater crocodile has killed a man in a river near villages where people have reported livestock losses in recent weeks.

Police spokesman Lt. Yoseph Marsudi said Thursday that the crocodile apparently sprang from the water and pulled 51-year-old Zam Ledoh under as the farmer searched for crabs.

It happened Tuesday in the Amabi river in Kupang district of East Nusatenggara province. The man's mangled body was found downriver the next day.

Villagers have asked authorities to do more to protect them from crocodiles and want this one to be hunted and killed. Marsudi said the river is home to some 20 saltwater crocodiles but attacks against humans are rare.

A crocodile killed another farmer in the same river in January, and villagers killed it days later.
