For me, the 'spice country' was propaganda for elementary school students. When I reached university, I read more books, I made conclusion that the 'spices' included marijuana or coca plant as Dutch East India Company (VOC) was too big to only just do kitchen spices.
Also, I believe the VOC was deliberately made bankrupt to cover up what VOC really traded the time, including humans. Maybe it's just my imagination.
