In 2000, member countries of the United Nations pledged to create 'a more peaceful, prosperous and just world' and 'to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty'. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set clear goals and were instrumental in uniting efforts and boosting development in many countries (By José Graziano da Silva, Jakarta).
