Prosecutors have sought a nine-year prison sentence for reputed gang leader Hercules Rozario Marshal, who has been charged with multiple offenses.
The charges, read out by prosecutor Fajar Aris Setiawan, included instigation of crime, vandalism, obstruction of justice and extortion.
'The defendant threatened the police while resisting arrest on March 8, taking his glass eyeball from the right eye socket and throwing it saying: 'That thing has been hit by a bullet!',' Fajar alleged at the hearing at the West Jakarta District Court.
Hercules, as stated in the indictment, also ordered the police to disperse while banging on a police car.
The prosecutor read out a witness statement; ''I'm Hercules! A veteran! One blow and you all die! Dismiss!',' Fajir told the court.
Hercules and 45 of his men were arrested following a clash with the police in Tjakra Multi Strategi retail complex in Kembangan, West Jakarta.
The clash broke out when the gang allegedly tried to provoke a fight with police officers who were guarding the area after reports that Hercules and his men had been shaking down the businesses.
Following the arrest, the police also found a military-issue pistol with magazines and ammunition in Hercules' house in the Kebon Jeruk Indah housing complex, not far from the location of his arrest.
During the hearing, Hercules thanked National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo and Jakarta Police chief Brig. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno for the decent treatment he and his men had received while in detention.
'We haven't prepared a defense because we believe in the authorities, the prosecutors and the court. We believe that we will have a fair trial,' said Hercules who is also the chairman of social organization the New Indonesia Public Movement (GRIB).
His supporters had gathered at the court from early on Thursday, causing traffic congestion along
Jl. S. Parman.
The hearing was adjourned until Monday to hear more witnesses.
