uthorities say that an environmentalist who worked to protect leatherback turtles on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast has been found dead on a beach used by drug traffickers.
Costa Rica's police investigations unit says in a statement that a motive in the killing of Jairo Mora Sandoval has not been determined.
Mora Sandoval was a volunteer with the nonprofit group Widecast, which protects turtle nests in Moin beach in Limon province from poachers. His body was found Friday. He had been beaten and shot in the head.
Widecast director Didiher Chacon says the 26-year-old volunteer had been patrolling the beach along with four other volunteers Thursday night when gunmen kidnapped them. The other volunteers escaped their attackers.
Chacon says Moin beach is used by drug traffickers.
