hepolice have named Zakaria Umar Hadi,chief of Belitung Regional Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD), a suspect for assaulting a SriwijayaAir flight attendant during a flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang onWednesday.

In response to being asked to turn off his cell phone Zakaria slapped Febriani, the flight attendant, in the face with a  rolled-up newspaper. The plane was about to land at the Depati Amir Airport, Pangkal Pinang.

'The suspect is currently detained at the Pangkal Pinang Police station for further questioning,' Pangkal Pinang police operational head Comr. AB Arifin said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

Zakaria is likely to face of violating the Criminal Code Article 351 on torture and Article 335 on offensive behavior with a maximum two-years-and-eight-months imprisonment.

Zakaria's lawyer Eliza did not deny her client's guilt but said she didn't think that he deserved to be detained.(hrl/dic)
