he Pangkal Pinang Police handed over the dossier on the Sriwijaya Air flight attendant assault case to prosecutors from the Pangkal Pinang Prosecutors' office on Wednesday.  In the dossier, senior Belitungofficial Zakaria Umar Hadi, the suspect, has been charged with violating the Criminal Code and could face up to two years, eight months in prison.

'We have questioned three witnesses, the victim's friends, other passengers and the victim herself,' Pangkal Pinang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bariza Sulfi said.

Zakaria, who is registered as head of the Bangka Belitung Regional Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD), is being detained at the Pangkal Pinang police detention center despite an attempt by Zakaria's lawyer to have the detention suspended.

When asked why the police had not also charged Zakaria with violating Law No.1/2009 on Air Travel, which carries more severe punishments, Bariza said that he could not tell the investigators what to do when carrying out an investigation.

'It is all up to the investigators from the beginning of the investigation,' he said.

Zakaria Umar Had has been named a suspect over an assault on flight attendant Nur Febriani who had asked him to switch off his phone while the plane was still landing. Zakaria allegedly slapped Febriani in the face with a rolled-up newspaper as he disembarked the plane.(dic)
