T

he National Police Commission (Kompolnas) met in camera today atNational Police headquarters in South Jakarta, with two top cops, both candidates toreplace Gen. Timur Pradopo as chief of theNational Police.

They are criminal investigations division chief Comr. Gen. Sutarman and National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief Comr. Gen. Anang Iskandar.

Kompolnas commissioner Adrianus Meliala said the meeting discussed formulating better policy. Adrianus had also implied that the two had been asked about their track records.

There are 11 generals vying to replace Timur, who will likely retire in late August. Kompolnas will interview the remaining eight candidates in the next week.

On Friday, Kompolnas will meet Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti and Insp. Gen. Anton Setiadi.

"We are required to send our recommendation to the President in early July," he said.

The commission is still waiting for reports about the assets and businesses of candidates and their families.

Analysts say that the leading candidates for the top job are Sutarman and Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno.(dic)
