'I tried to play like yesterday's first set. When my opponent tried to develop his game, I played aggressively,' Tommy said.
His stunning performance over Chen Long in the first round, which marked his first win in seven meetings, will likely push him to progress on.
Another local player, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, also advanced to the next stage after beating Japan's Takuma Ueda 18-21, 21-12, 22-20.
Ueda, who looked dreadful after the match, said he was disappointed with the results given the high hopes put on him following the elimination of fifth-seeded Kenichi Tago in the first round at the hands of Alamsyah Yunus.
Ueda said he was able to keep up with Hayom's plays in the first two games and that he did not find it difficult to control the shuttlecock amid strong breezes from the air conditioners inside the stadium.
'I just played as usual, even though the crowd was cheering for my opponent,' said the world's 16 ranking player.
The third game was tough. Ueda somehow slowed down and failed to maintain his speed.
Ueda last met with Hayom at the quarterfinals of last year's Thomas Cup with Ueda winning 21-14, 21-19.
Hayom said he gave it his all during the match. 'Maybe it's because I played in front of the home crowd'.
Japan has no contenders left for the men's singles title as Kazuma Sakai and Sho Sakai were its last to bow out.
Sakai lost to India's Rajah Menuri Venkata Gurusaidutt 21-12, 9-21, 21-19, while Sasaki was beaten by Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana 21-13, 21-19.
Tommy will play Gurusaidutt, while Hayom will take on China's third-seeded Du Pengyu in the quarterfinals on Friday.
In men's doubles, Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan crushed compatriots Berry Angriawan/Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto 21-13, 17-21, 21-12. They will meet China's fifth-seeded Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng, who defeated Indonesia's Andrei Adistia/Gideon Markus Fernaldi, in the quarterfinals.
Another men's doubles favorite pair Alvent Yulianto Chandra/Markis Kido breezed past Malaysia's second seeded 23-21, 21-15. They will meet eighth-seeded Shin Baek-choel/Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea, who beat Thailand's Maneepong Jongjit/Nitiphon Puangpuapech, in the next round.
