mall and medium enterprises have voiced support for the city administration's plan to move the Jakarta Fair from Kemayoran in Central Jakarta.
Fank-fank, a local designer exhibiting at the Jakarta Creative Products Week, said she supported the plan to move the Jakarta Fair to a different venue if it meant rent for space was lower that the current rate.
'The rental rates at the current Jakarta Fair are not affordable. I could hardly make a profit,' she told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of the Jakarta Creative Products Week's opening ceremony on Friday at Silang Monas in Central Jakarta.
Fank-fank, who designs creative sarongs with traditional patterns, said she supported the plan to make Monas the venue for the next Jakarta Fair.
Mumun, a kerak telur (egg crust) vendor, shared the same opinion.
'I don't have to pay to rent space here. The committee provided the booth as well, so all I have to bring are the ingredients. It is more profitable because I could hardly make profit at Jakarta Fair as I had to pay millions of rupiah to rent space,' Mumun said.
Up to 140 small and medium businesses are participating in the Jakarta Creative Products Week, which ends on Sunday.
Committee head Andi Baso said that selected tenants would represent Jakarta at the national Creative Products Week next month.
Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said in his opening speech that the city administration would provide more facilities and space to small and medium businesses.
Previously, Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said he had considered Monas and Ancol as venues for Jakarta Fair in an effort to reclaim the event for small and medium businesses. He argued that the current fair was dominated by big businesses.
The Jakarta Fair is held every June to celebrate the capital's anniversary, which falls on June 22.
The fair, which was initiated to boost the local economy, was first held at the National Monument (Monas) square from June to July 1968
