ational Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo apologized on Tuesday for the shooting of two journalists covering the fuel protests. He also promised to investigate the incidents thoroughly.

'I apologize for the incident. Investigations are underway to see on why there could be victims during the demonstrations,' said Timur at the People's Consultative Assembly/ House of Representatives (MPR/DPR) compound in Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.com.

He further said that the police would also cover the cost of their treatment.

'The police will be responsible until they are fully recovered,' said Timur.

Roby Kelerey, a photojournalist from Mata Publik daily newspaper in Ternate, North Maluku, was shot with a rubber bullet on his left leg and Antonius Nugroho Kusumawan, a video journalist from Trans7 in Jambi, suffered serious head wounds from fragments of a teargas canister shot by police to disperse student demonstrators.

Timur said that during the demonstrations, the police only tried to ensure people that any demonstrations would not disrupt the public order.

'We ask all sides to come to be aware that if demonstrations turn violent, measures will be taken to control the situation,' said Timur.

'Demonstrators should not disturb other people. Please respect other people who are carrying out their activities,' he added. (fan/ebf)
