tate-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina's corporate communication vice president Ali Mundakir in Jakarta on Wednesday described significant increases in premium and diesel fuel consumption ahead of price rises expected later this week.

On Tuesday, consumption of premium reached 90,000 kiloliters, up by 12.5 percent from the normal 80,000 kiloliters.

Meanwhile, the diesel fuel consumption increased by 11.6 percent to 48,000 kiloliters per day from 43,300.

The realized distribution of premium reached 88,000 kiloliters during the last two weeks while distributed diesel fuel reached 48,000 kiloliters.

'We have increased distribution by 10 percent from normal daily averages,' said Ali.

Pertamina has prepared up to 1.76 million kiloliters of premium which are sufficient to meet the needs of people for 22 days.

Meanwhile, 860,000 kiloliters of diesel fuel have been prepared to secure supplies for 20 days.

'We can make sure that the fuel stock is safe; but, we hope that people do not buy fuel excessively,' said Ali.

Ahead of the price rises, fuel terminals and gas filling stations will operate longer than usual, if necessary, 24 hours a day.

'We have established fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) taskforce posts both at the Pertamina headquarters and in regions which started operating from May 17 to June 30 to monitor the distribution of fuel and LPG,' said Ali. (ebf)
