Ten players have been in concentrated training since the end of May with Rumah Cemara, a group that focuses on HIV/AIDS, in Bandung, West Java.
Rumah Cemara codirector Ginandjar Derajat Koesmayadi said the 10 players hailed from several provinces including Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali and South Sulawesi. The final team will comprise a total of eight players.
The Homeless World Cup is an annual international soccer competition that brings together more than 300,000 people who are homeless and/or socially marginalized. Half of the selected participants are people living with HIV/AIDS, while the remainder are homeless people.
During the 2012 Homeless World Cup held in Mexico, the Indonesian team finished fourth. Training leader Indra Hidayat said a five-day training session would take place in Mount Kareumbi from June 18 to 22. Mt. Kareumbi is a forested area located on the border between Bandung, Garut and Sumedang.
'The participants will have to survive in nature with minimal resources. We hope when they are physically pressured and forced to face these natural conditions, their personal characters and strengths will emerge,' said Indra.
