Papua Police named six people suspects in the burning of a police station and dormitory in Pegunungan Bintang regency in Papua.

The police's director of detective unit for special crimes, Sr.Comr.Bambang Priyambada, said on Tuesday the six suspects, identified with initials EK, WA, AY, KA, YT and YA, would be prosecuted under Article 170 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on publicly perpetrating crimes against people and property as well as Article 178 KUHP on burning down property intentionally.

He said investigators were also still questioning two eye witnesses of the incident.

'We continue examining them intensively to disclose the mastermind behind the attack,' said Bambang, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The burning of Pegunungan Bintang Police station and dormitory in Oksibil, Sunday, was perpetrated by local people allegedly provoked by hearing news that a local from their kampung had suffered wounds after being beaten by a police officer.

According to the police report, the incident began when police tried to take a local, who was allegedly drunk, into custody after catching him red-handed trying to damage a police motorcycle. A fight ensued as he resisted police to avoid arrest.

Unlike the police's version, other reports said that the attack was triggered by news saying that a local was mistreated by police, which angered his relatives and friends. They then attacked the Pegunungan Bintang Police precinct, burning down the precinct building and a police dormitory as well as several cars and motorcycles belonging to the police. (ebf)
