T

he government plans to apply a quota and charge a safeguard duty on imported wheat flour in the coming weeks as the Indonesian Trade Safeguard Committee (KPPI) concludes its probe into surging imports.

The measures are set to replace a 20 percent provisional safeguard duty set since last December on imported flour after an initial finding of the committee indicated that rising imports hurt domestic wheat producers.

KPPI chairman Bachrul Chairi said on Friday that the combination of measures would be effective to both defend the domestic industry, which had been suffering due to the influx of imported flour, and accommodate the interests of Indonesia'€™s trading partners.

Bachrul declined to mention the exact quota and range of the safeguard duty, but hinted that the additional import tariff would be regressive every year during the period of the implementation.
