Minimum wage negotiation meeting canceled

A

meetingto negotiate the 2014 minimum wage scheduled for Wednesday was canceled due to the absence of workerrepresentatives.

The tripartite agreement should have involved representatives from the city administration as well as employers and workers.

Jakarta Remuneration Council worker representative Akhmad Jazuli said that workers demanded that the basic cost of living (KHL) be set at Rp 2.7 million (US$243).

The Jakarta Remuneration Council proposed Rp 2.29 million, which was based on the 60 standard living components stipulated in Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9/2013 on the provincial minimum wage.

'€œWe refused to attend the meeting,'€ Jazuli said on Wednesday at City Hall. '€œIf any decision has been made [today], it will be unlawful,'€ he said.

Previously, workers had warned that should the government fail to meet their demands then they would organize a nationwide strike, slated for Oct.31 to Nov.1.(dic)
